REL · CLASS 8 COST COMPARISON

Electric vs. diesel.

EV Truck & Diesel Day Cab. Your miles. Your assumptions.

Start with an example. Make it yours. The starting diesel price uses a dated EIA U.S. average. Other prices, MPG and service costs are illustrative—not REL quotes or verified fleet averages. All amounts are in USD.

Assumptions, sources & calculation notes

What is sourced—and what is an example?

The EV Truck is a generic comparison vehicle. The 1.7 kWh/mi starting value is an editable planning example, not a verified industry average or a guarantee for a particular truck. It is treated as truck-side energy for this illustrative calculation; the separate 90% charging-efficiency default is also a planning assumption. Use energy consumption for your route and equipment.

The diesel day cab is a generic comparison vehicle. The 7 MPG starting value is an editable planning example, not a manufacturer rating or verified industry average. Both year choices use the same assumptions. Use MPG for your route and equipment.

The starting diesel price is $6.179/gal from the EIA U.S. on-highway diesel average for the week of Oct 12, 2026, including taxes. Regional and fleet-negotiated prices can differ; enter your actual price. The reference is checked weekly, and its date is retained if a new figure cannot be verified. Electricity at $0.15/kWh, maintenance and tires at $0.18/mi diesel and $0.10/mi EV, and DEF at $0.02/mi are editable demonstration values. They are not current market quotes, verified fleet averages or promised savings.

How the comparison works

  • Diesel energy cost = miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon.
  • Electricity cost = miles × truck-side kWh/mi ÷ charging efficiency × price per kWh. A 90% efficiency means dividing by 0.90. Use 100% with already-metered consumption.
  • Maintenance and DEF use entered cost per mile. Insurance uses cost per truck per month. Shared charging fees are divided by truck count once.
  • Both monthly lease quotes must be entered before either is included. Costs bundled in the lease should not also be entered separately.
  • Multi-year differences hold annual miles and prices constant. They do not model inflation, discounting, residual value or ownership equity.

What is outside this comparison?

Upfront charging construction and installation, down payments, refundable deposits, taxes, registration, driver labor, downtime, payload-related revenue effects, battery replacement and residual values are not modeled. Add applicable recurring charger payments in the charging field. This is a comparison of selected costs, not total cost of ownership or a route-feasibility assessment.

Rebates and tax benefits are not deducted automatically. If an approved incentive is already reflected in a quoted lease payment, use that net payment without deducting the incentive again. Explore potential truck incentives .
